Favorability of the national laboratories is high among New Mexico residents.  Overall, 68 percent of all residents have a favorable impression of the national labs (Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque and Los Alamos National Laboratory) in New Mexico.

Demographically, residents between the ages of 18-34 years and over the age of 65 tend to be very favorable over other middle age categories.  Favorability is also very high (83 percent) among those with an annual income between $60,000 and 80,000.  Conversely, only 57 percent of New Mexico residents with an income of less than $20,000 have a favorable opinion of the labs.

Geographically, residents living in the Albuquerque Metro and North Central region have the highest level of favorability toward the national labs. This is not surprising since the State’s two national laboratories are located in those regions.

Despite the longstanding presence of the national labs, a high number of New Mexico residents do not have enough information about what the labs do in order to form an opinion about their mission. More than one in 10 New Mexico residents responded “don’t know/won’t say” when asked for their overall impression of the national laboratories.
